April 13, 2026: City of Menlo Park Birdwalk, Bedwell Bayfront Park
Lots of rain in the days leading up to the 4th Monthly City of Menlo Park Bedwell Bayfront Park Birdwalk Monday morning. The forecast said no rain and the morning looked promising as we all showed up. We gathered as a group to do introductions, discuss the background and origin of the park. Rick passed out a checklist of common species for this time of year at Bedwell Bayfront Park. We considered bringing rain jackets and umbrellas along the way, but none of us thought we nee

Fun evening with Jenn, Gordon and Ellie. We got rained on a bit but that is when the Cooper's Hawk and Coyote showed up. They were both looking to make the burrowing owl a tasty dinner. The coyote headed right for the burrowing owl but I yelled loudly for the Coyote to leave and luckily it crossed the rockbed creek approx 30 feet behind the burrowing owl! Red-shouldered Hawk Cooper's Hawk It's always exciting when this one stops by a tree on its way out of its tree hole. It w

Fun adventure with Eleni, her sister and their kids. We saw Norma the barn owl and a Western Screech Owl and a Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk catch its prey. Unfortunately the burrowing owls were no where to be found this evening. The Western Screech Owl flew to a nearby tree after it left its roosting spot so I was able to get this first shot hand-held in the dark.

Had a fun time with two lovely couples Justin and Summer and Simon and Caroline. As I arrived at the meeting location, Justin and his group were tail gating with hot cocoa drinks. We saw Norma, the barn owl, a burrowing owl and we watched a western screech owl come out of a tree hole and fly away to start its evening hunt.

This time the tide was high so we saw a bit more bird action this time. It was a nice day and a fun group! Lovely people as always. I showed up a bit early and saw this one while I was waiting for the group to show up. Snowy Egret (black beak, yellow feet) Sushi breakfast! We're off! Our first bird sighting were these Lesser Goldfinches.. This one is a female since no black cap on her head. Male Lesser Goldfinch since he has a black cap on

We saw Norma, the barn owl, a burrowing owl and a western screech owl at 3 different locations. It was another fun evening! Private Sunday evening tour with Katia and her lovely family. We saw Norma, the barn owl, a burrowing owl and a western screech owl at 3 different locations. It was a lovely evening! For some reason, I did not take many owl pictures this evening but have included a screenshot of one below! Nice recommendation on nextdoor from Katia: Our family of 5 went on an owls tour with Rick in December, and had a great time observing 3 very different owls! It is such a unique and amazing

Friday evening public group tour with Stephane, Kristen, Mike Hodges, Ahn and Shekhar. Not sure why, but unfortunately I did not take any pictures of our participants. We saw Norma the female barn owl, a burrowing owl then for the finale, we watched a Western Screech Owl come out of its tree hole, land on a nearby tree then land on a neighbor's roof. One of the best WSO experiences I've had. Overall, it was a fun evening. This is one of the best Western Screech Owl images I'

February 6, 2026: City of Menlo Park Birdwalk, Bedwell Bayfront Park
This was the second of a series of 3 bird walks led by me and sponsored by the City of Menlo Park. This time the tide was low and as a result not as much bird action as we had for the first bird walk. Going forward, we will ensure we pick the days where the tide is high to ensure more bird activity. But we still had a nice walk and did see some birds.

January 16, 2026: City of Menlo Park Birdwalk, Bedwell Bayfront Park
The first of a series of 3 bird walks led by me and sponsored by the City of Menlo Park. It was a great birding morning with a group of 10 wonderful bird loving people and lots of wildlife action and great weather. Snowy Egret - black beak and yellow feet or "golden slippers" Northern Shoveler - head can appear both purple and green because its iridescent feathers shift color dramatically with the light, looking deep green in some angles and a glossy purple or even black in o

Public Group tour with Sherry, Dharshan and Avnai and Jane. We saw Norma the Barn Owl and the Burrowing Owl and we went to the Western Screech Owl but it did not come out of the tree hole, most likely due to the loud music from the party next door, so we left but on the way back home, I found out that it ended up coming out a few minutes after we left!!
