June 10, 2026: City of Menlo Park Bedwell Bayfront Park Bird Walk No. 6

What a delightful morning it was! Despite the warmth, I had a fantastic time on our bird walk at Bedwell Bayfront Park. I was joined by Eileen, Lynn, Stan, Deborah, Victoria, Carolee, and Delores. This marked the sixth monthly bird walk sponsored by the City of Menlo Park.

We began our adventure near the parking area. There, we watched barn swallows darting in and out of their mud nests. It was heartwarming to see the adult birds feeding their young. The babies must still be quite small, as the adults were going all the way into the holes to deliver food.

As we strolled along the bayfront, we spotted two ducks. We were unsure of their species but suspected they might be male Gadwalls. The excitement of identifying different birds kept us engaged.

As we continued our walk, we encountered a variety of birds. The sight of a Snowy Egret was particularly striking. Its bright white feathers and yellow slippers were a beautiful contrast against the blue sky.

We also spotted Forster's Tern and many other fascinating birds. Each sighting brought a wave of excitement and joy.

Discovering Hidden Gems

The day was full of surprises. We stumbled upon a group of Black-necked Stilts, their long legs wading gracefully through the water. It was a sight to behold!

As we ventured further, we spotted three Great Egrets perched in the trees. Their elegant posture and striking appearance made for a perfect photo opportunity.

We climbed up the back hill into the park, where we were greeted by the sight of a Western Bluebird. Its vibrant colors brought smiles to our faces.

A Dream Come True

One of the highlights of the day was discovering artichoke blooms. I had shared with the group that capturing a hummingbird on an artichoke bloom was my dream shot. Just a minute later, Delores called out to me, "Hey Rick, there’s a hummingbird on that artichoke bloom!" Everyone turned around, but alas, the hummingbird took off before we could snap a photo. Still, it was thrilling to know they were feeding on the blooms.

After everyone left, I returned to the artichoke blooms. To my delight, I saw two different hummingbirds feeding alongside butterflies and bumblebees. It was a magical moment.

I finally got my dream shot of a female Anna's Hummingbird feeding. Now, I’m eager to capture a more colorful male hummingbird enjoying the blooms!
